2012

John Cusack is a great actor. Loved him in so many movies, many directed by John Hughes.

This was an action adventure, suspense kind of movie, with all that end of the world stuff thrown in their, and some biblical references with their solutions to problems. Still, a decent action flick.

Zombieland

This was a great movie. Even had a cameo by Bill Murray. Great characters and great actors, good stuff.

9

This was an animated film. It was produced by Tim Burton. I really didn't know what role Burton played until I saw the movie. I just knew that his name was attached to it somehow. The movie was an apocalyptic animated version of Terminator in some ways. The machines have turned against us and kill us all. The scientist that created these super smart machines realizes that this is going to happen and somehow devises a way to place his soul into 9 little puppet people that he has created for just such a purpose.

The film talks about these puppets being all there is left of life on earth, but these puppets cannot reproduce and the last time I checked that is one of the components of the definition of life we have come up with, it has to be able to replicate itself somehow. The evil machine seems to be able to reproduce itself, so it is actually more alive than these little muppets, at least in my book.

Of course the little puppets end up killing the big mean machine and there is this weird scene where the muppets "souls" come out and then go up to the sky and it starts raining with life filled drops.

I loved the film visually, and the voice acting was great, but the whole soul idea and evil technology is a bit much. Evil is in people, not in technology. I was just thinking about this whole idea earlier, that people create all these monsters to be afraid of and scare themselves, but we really only need to be afraid of ourselves and our fellow people around us, and the odd animal and insect here and there, maybe a virus, but no monsters.

Extract

This movie was kind of fun. Not hilarious like Office Space, though I think it was made by the same guy that created King of the Hill. I think the real funny stuff was the interactions the main character had with his neighbor and with the guy he hired to pound his wife. Also Ben Affleck did a great job for what his role was. I can certainly remember Affleck's name, but I like the main character better, it will come to me: Jason Bateman. That guy is a funny man. He was fantastic in Arrested Development. I hope he gets more work.

Plot summary is that Bateman's character cannot get laid by his wife anymore, so Affleck's character convinces him to hire a stud to seduce his wife so Bateman can have an affair guilt free. All of the convincing happens while Bateman is on either special k, xanax, or something else. Tragic funny stuff ensues, the stud is pretty funny, and of course the movie ends in a death, the annoying neighbor.

Maybe Mike Judge was doing too much, directing, acting, writing in this movie, but it just was not a hilarious movie. It was a good one, don't get me wrong. I am glad I went to it. Fun stuff, but you just know Mide Judge has got a seriously funny ass movie in him. It might be cool if he brought King of Hill to the big screen but not in animated form, used real actors, etc. The guy sure is talented. It is easy to forget that he created Beavis and Butthead too. An amazing talent with a keen eye for the American Zeitgeist, at least the tragically funny part of it.

District 9

Being a lover of Sci-Fi, I loved this movie. It was well done, interesting, and seemed to be telling us something about being a human being.

The movie is set in South Africa, which is interesting in-itself, because not too many movies are set in South Africa. Also, the movie is filmed in a documentary style, which is also interesting, similar to Cloverfield, but District 9 is a more serious film. I am really surprised that it had such a wide release. I knew the film might be interesting when I saw the marketing posters on restroom doors stating that aliens were not allowed, similar to Jim Crow signs in the US. Also that it seems to be a South African film about South African issues, but prejudice is everywhere and a universal issue.

The South African setting brought up thoughts of Apartheid. A major part of the movie is that the aliens have been allowed to only live in a certain area, an alien ghetto, that looks very similar to images that I have seen of Soweto in South Africa. The story's starting point is the eviction of the aliens to move them into a different, newer ghetto that has been built for the aliens. So, you have this somewhat likable guy being charged with evicting the aliens. They did and excellent job of building this guys character. He's likable, but what he is doing is despicable, and the way he talks about the aliens, using various terms for them, is certainly reminiscent of what is still happening all over the world when people are dealing with a different culture than their own.

One of the best things about science fiction is that it can be thought provoking and critical about society without coming right out and shoving your face in it. This movie does that very well.

Funny People

This was a good movie. Adam Sandler plays a terminally ill comic that has had huge success similar to his own career. His character lives in a huge mansion alone. The other main characters are Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman, and Eric Bana.

Sandler's character George Simmons hires Seth Rogan's character Ira to be his personal assistant and write jokes for him, he also tells him that he is terminally ill. We watch George perform stand-up and Ira as well. Simmons starts getting in touch with people in his life to tell them he is ill. So there are tons of cameos of pretty famous comedians, which is pretty cool. One of the people he gets in touch with is the love of his life who is married and has two kids, and an Australian husband played very well by Eric Bana. Bana is actually from Australia, so it was cool to here him actually speaking like an Australian, and his character is all excited about Australian rules football.

One of the cool parts of the movie was Ira's friends played by Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman. Schwartzman is one of my favorite comedic actors ever since Rushmore, and Slackers. There are some pretty funny interactions between the three.

Simmons and Ira end up going to the Bay area, after Simmons finds out he is disease free, where Simmons's love of his life lives with her husband and two kids. Here, the movie's romantic part builds up, and falls apart in a very short period of time. Simmons and Ira end up getting into a fight, Simmons and Bana's character too. Simmons kind of ends all his relationships at once with a huge melt-down. Simmons also appears as kind of scumbag Hollywood type that is wheeling and dealing all the time and he cannot relate to his true love's home movies of her kid. Ira kind of lets Simmons have it on the ride home and gives him some honesty. Simmons fires Ira, Ira returns to work at Otto's, a grocery store he was working at prior to being hired by Simmons. Simmons character shows up at Ira's work and helps him with some jokes.

This was a pretty cool movie. Adam Sandler plays a character that is similar to himself, probably not personality-wise, but similar fame. And the interactions between Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman are priceless. Ira has a romantic interest too, played by Aubrey Plaza. Her character is a nerdy stand-up comic, that is funny and sexy too.

The Ugly Truth

This was pretty bad. That chick from Grey's Anatomy was in it, you know, the one that is dying and just got married, had visions etc. I am so annoyed by that show and her character, that her name escapes me. Also, that guy who was in PS I love You, but also in Rocknrolla, so he's an action and comedic actor, Gerard Butler.

There have been movies like this before, He Said, She Said comes to mind with Kevin Bacon and Liz Perkins. But in comparison, this was a poorer version. What was bad about it? Pretty much too little character development. You are just supposed to accept these two, one a high powered knock-out female that cannot get a date (yeah right), the other a rough-hewn chauvinistic guy that tells it like it is when it comes to relationship, but he's all broken inside like a little girl. Give me a fucking break. She's a pretty attractive woman, and she can't get a date, except via on-line? Unbelievable. He lives with his sister and her kid and treats woman like trash, maybe, but unlikely. His sister would've straightened him out prior.

All of this wretchedness is set in a TV studio with the female playing a high powered news show producer, with an annoying assistant who actually says she is living vicariously through the dateless producer, and of course the assistant is pretty hot too, so we are to believe she can't get a date either, give me a fucking break. Butler's character is hired to bring up the ratings with his raw public access dating advice show, which becomes a segment on the news show. So, Gray girl is so powerful and successful that she has to have help with her horrible ratings? These two horrible characters come together and hate each other at first, then they fall in love. She's in his ear while producing the show, he's in her ear when she's on dates with this perfect doctor guy she meets.

One scene was pretty much over the top. Barbarian man gives annoying Gray's anatomy star a pair of vibrating panties that she puts on. Then suddenly out of nowhere she has to go to dinner with Barbarian, and the big wigs at the main station in New York or LA or some crap like that. The remote falls out of vibrating panties purse, and low and behold a kid at the next table picks it up and starts jerking terminally ill grey star's clitoris. How did this make it anywhere off the cutting room floor. I thought it was kind of funny though with her blowing her load to a child's remote hand. How is this not kiddie porn? Because the midget is unaware that he's jerking her off? Pretty tasteless though. I guess everyone wants to do Harry Met Sally, but this is just too far I think. It would've been incredibly tasteless, but more funny if the person that picked it up was a nun or retarded, or say the waitress, and she tries to use it on the TV, but just makes Gray girl cum. But a kid?

Of course this piece of crap ends with Gray girl and rough man kissing on a balloon ride. She said, "I thought you didn't like me, but I love you. that doctor guy with the perfect abs was such a dick, that I couldn't suck his." He said, "I thought you were banging the doctor guy, but you were pining for me all along? oh, lets kiss on this balloon, and finally fuck each other because we are perfect for each other, how fucking romantic." Of course, happily ever after, the end. I go to too many movies.

GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra

Good lord, what a piece of crap. There were some pretty good special effects here and there, but good lord, the acting was pretty terrible. I think one of the characters was a Wayans brother. Ouch, he should've not taken this role, but you can't blame him for wanting to get paid.

It pretty much was a vehicle, I am assuming, to market GI Joe action figures and toys. But I would not want to take my kids to this movie, if I had kids, it was too violent. I would stay away from this movie.

Up

I saw this movie twice. Once with my gf Holly, the second time with my Nephews and my Mom.

It was in 3D so we wore those silly glasses, so that was a fun bit of novelty.

The story was pretty cool. A kid dreams of adventures and travel, meets a girl that dreams of adventure and travel, they grow up, get married, live their lives, but do not seek adventure and travel, do not have kids. They get old, the wife passes away. The old guy is about to go away to an old folks home when he goes on a fantastic adventure via house balloon, meets his childhood hero, and makes friends with a kid, saves the day. Yeah!

Pixar always does a great job! Keep it up Pixar!

Away We Go

This was an interesting movie staring two funny people: John Krasinsky and Maya Rudolf. Krasinsky I know from the TV show The Office, and Maya Rudolf from Saturday Night Live. I am glad these two got to make a film as the main characters because they are both very talented. Especially Maya Rudolf, Krasinski is kind of new, but has already been the main character in movies, but Maya has been around for a while and as far as I know hasn't starred as the main character, so good for her.

This was a funny touching movie about what "home" and "family" means. Rudolf's character is pregnant, John's parents are moving to Europe, and his parents are the only reason they are living where they are, so they start a journey trying to find a new home and family in order to start their own.

It was pretty tragic when they visited their friends in Canada. Really funny when the visited Krasinki's character's sister, and Maya's friend and sister in Arizona. And the movie has a very sweet ending.

Star Trek

Do not get me wrong, I love Star Wars, and its whole prequel series. It is great that they came up with that idea for some movies and went through with it. I only mention it because I think that those prequels probably greased the wheels for the Star Trek prequel.

I really pretty much disliked the first Star Trek movie. But the Wrath of Khan was a very decent movie. I cannot say that I have seen all the later Star Trek movies from the Next Generation group, but I have seen all the old ones.

This new Star Trek movie was great. It used all the things I like about science fiction movies, time travel and great special effects. There was a real specific enemy with a real specific story. I think that is what I did not like about the first movie. The enemy was a nebulous cloud, which lead to a nebulous plot, etc. If you like Star Trek, you will love this movie.

X-Men: Wolverine

I saw this in the theatre on May 1, 2009. I enjoyed this movie. There was not much of Wolverine's childhood though, just his fathers' deaths and then they move into this kind of montage of Wolverine's war experiences. No real explanation of his mutation or why he ended up the way he did, but I guess that is just a premise of the whole series.

I liked Wolverine's brother. I did not get his "superhero" name though. And experiment 11 was pretty cool, I wish they would've had more of him, but he seems to lose his life in this movie, hopefully they will bring him back somehow.

I thought it was a neat use of Three Mile Island.

Lots of action and special effects. I hope they keep making movies from this series.

Marley & Me

I watched this Blu Ray last night. You know, I came away from this movie thinking that it was just kind of an Owen Wilson/Jennifer Aniston movie, instead of a movie about a dog. I did not read the book, which I assume is good or they would not have made a movie about it. I like Owen Wilson, Aniston, not so much, she's ok, but she just has way too much annoying back story with that whole Brad Pitt relationship. Owen, you can get lost in him even with his "suicide" attempt because he must be a good actor, but Aniston, I just sit there and think she is not a 40-something mother of three. Oh well.

The dog did a good job. They obviously used several dogs, a puppy, an older dog. I really liked the older dog, he did a good job of acting old. I actually met a dog actor when we went to Universal Studios a few weeks ago. He was pretty neat. The trainer said that he was in Beverly Hills Chihuahua. I put my arm around him and scratched his back a little when I had my picture taken with him. He seemed to appreciate it.

I did like the fact that they had a gag reel on this disc. I always hate it when there is no gag real, because everyone knows they make flubs while they are making these things, especially comedies. This is definitely one of my pet peeves, I can't even shut up about it when they include one.

State of Play

This movie starred Ben Affleck and Russel Crowe, among others. It was a pretty interesting movie, a political thriller ala All The Presidents Men. Unlike All The Presidents Men, this one is fiction, but points to scandal that happened a while back when a Washington aid went missing. I do not think they ever found the aid, she just dissappeared.

A woman dies, a senator (Ben Affleck's character) is involved that is also a friend of Russel Crowe's reporter character. They slowly reveal the story and it has a thrilling ending. A decent movie.

Russel Crowe does a great job. I don't know if he gained weight for this role, or if this is just his look now, but I think it makes him look like a regular guy to have a pounch, though it is not healthy.

This movie made me think what will military subcontractors do to keep a contract. Not only that what will they do to keep a war going. Those security people in Iraq keep their jobs as long as there is conflict and a need for them. As soon as there is no conflict, they will lose their jobs. I wonder if they actually cause trouble. Though the movie touches on Iraq, it is set in Washington, and takes place only in Washington.

I Love You Man

Great movie! Loved it! I laughed incredibly hard. I would definitely recommend this movie. I have been recommending it too, and I actually bought the DVD too, cannot wait to check out the gag reel.

It is about a guy that is getting married and he needs a best man at the wedding, but he does not really have any good guy friends, mostly women friends. So he sets out on a quest to obtain a good male friend and hopefully a "best man" for his wedding ceremony.

The two guys that play the main roles were brilliantly funny. I have seen them in several other films and they did great jobs previously, but this film really showed off their comedic and acting talents. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel are their names. Lately they have been in tons of really funny movies, and I hope they keep making the great choices they have been making lately as far as the films they are making.

What is the meta-story here? That friendships are important because a friend will help you in ways that you cannot help yourself. Sometimes we do not know what are problems are and a friend will sometimes see them better and they can come up with different solutions. What I am thinking about specifically here, is that Jason Segel's character is a different kind of guy and he helps Paul Rudd's character in a unique way by buying advertising for him with Paul Rudd's money, kind of forcing Rudd's character to help himself.

Knowing

Nicholas Cage film about knowing the future. I always love Sci-Fi movies, or at least like them. I liked this one. A cool idea, but it felt kind of slammed together. And Nicholas Cage as a brilliant code breaking scientist guy needs some work, or at least some more character development.

The meta-story of this kind of film to me, is Hollywood trying to tell us that we are doing something wrong to our planet. This movie was very similar to the Day the Earth Stood still with Keanu Reeves. Artists, or at least the kinds of artists that can have films made, think that we are doing something wrong and that we are screwing up our planet. This is what I take from this film.

Last Home on the Left

This movie was kind of an interesting revenge flick. What would you do if someone that hurt your loved one came to you for help.

Apparently Hollywood thinks that we would kill them.

He's Just Not That Into You

This was a pretty funny movie. It tried to get all Harry Met Sally on us with these interviews of people telling their stories spliced in here and there. It worked kind of.

Lots of stuff rung true for me in this movie. Sometimes the person your interested in is just not that interested in you. I see people focus on one person almost to the point of obsession, but the thing is, relationships are not that hard. I guess what I really mean to say is that getting into a relationship is not that hard, it is staying in it, that is hard. If you are having trouble just getting into a committed relationship with someone, then that someone is just not that into you.

And that is what this movie is about
